I have 2 questions.

1. Is it true that Accounting course work and Finance course work are very similar to each other?

2. If I wanted to go into the private equity, hedge fund, venture capital investment banking..etc fields, would a degree in accounting be good enough or would I have to be a to be a finance major?

oh ok well my major is business right now with a concentration in accounting but I have to take macro/micro-economics as part of my course work. I was just curious if was possible to break into those fields with my major because I have read about hedge fund mangers, private equity mangers and investment bankers that majored in non-financial degrees like engineering, computer science, physics..etc.

It is true that lower level finance AKA the beginnings of finance are just like 100 level Financial accounting, preparing balance sheets, finding NPV, net income, depreciation, all that stuff. I am a Finance major with an Eco minor, and I feel that my Finance major really helps me in my ECO classes. Having a background in business directly translates to what you learn about in economics...for example knowing why the economy is the it is, or knowing what a stimulus check will do.

Now to answer you question about breaking into different fields. From my personal experience and my understanding having a degree in a certain field does not limit you to what jobs you can have. Most jobs with major accounting firms or hedge firms or even insurance and stock brokerages involve a lot of on sight training, learning things that would have never been learned in the class room. Having a degree and graduating with either your masters or your bachelors is just to show a potential employer that you are qualified for a job, and that you are capable of learning the material. Hope that helped a little bit.

from what ive acquired, you have to be extremely good at it
i guess its like any other profession, you have to search for the job
and once you have the job it all depends on how many clients you have
