Excessive speed may have been the cause of a crash that killed a Brentwood teen and left his brother, who was driving the car, in critical condition Tuesday, according to Suffolk police.

Benjamin Claudio, 16, was driving north on Crooked Hill Road in Brentwood at about 11:45 a.m. when he went off the east side of the road, hit a tree and struck a parked car, said Det. Sgt. Tony Lavista.

Claudio, who had a junior driver's license, was partially ejected from the 1990 Acura Integra he was driving.

He was taken by helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where he was in critical but stable condition late Tuesday with head and neck injuries, police said.

The driver's brother, Peter Claudio, 15, was the lone passenger in the car. He was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he died, police said.

The conditions of Benjamin Claudio's junior driver's license require the driver to be accompanied by a parent, guardian or other responsible adult at least 21 years old.

Speed might have been a factor," Lavista said. "We're not ruling that out.

idk him personally but i have a few of my close friends that were really close to him and considered them their little brother. So sad & so young.
